Phnom Bakheng, situated 1.7km north-west of Angkor Wat, is the most popular temple for sunset. The temple sits on a hill offering a widespread view overlooking the plains of Angkor and Tonle Sap Lake, and can be reached by either walking up a trail for about 15 mins or riding on an elephant (USD20).

Upon reaching the base of the temple, there are steep steps to climb amongst partial ruins to get to the uppermost level of the temple-mountain. Allow time to reach the summit of the temple early (at least before 5.30pm) to get a good spot. It is recommended to wear flat shoes or sandals with grip and it is safest to climb up or down the steps of the temple sideways since the each step is no wider than the width of a shoe. Also, do bring a torch for the walk back down the hill as it gets dark quickly.
