On our way back from Kompong Khleang, we make a stop at Damdek market, located in the small town of Damdek, 40km east of Siem Reap town. Unlike the old market in the centre of Siem Reap town, Damdek market is truly a local market where tourists can hardly be spotted and groceries are known to be cheaper.

variety of fish caught from Tonle Sap

cleaning and cutting

skinning and deboning

fresh green vegetables

sieving of rice

water hyacinth ropes, jossticks,… & stacks of dried fish sold here

school children cycling pass the market

bicycles under the shade

Aha..where there are less tourists…things are cheaper. People should skip those markets packed with tourists and visit this one
About those dried fish, are they eels?
You pix can really how the local life of Siem Reap
I thought you were living there for a long time if you didn’t tell me you were travel there,
all pictures show their truly routine life, so nice!
The fish look fresh… must be yummy for sushi… huhuhuu…
the nite n old market look very interesting… i thnik much better than our pasar mlm…
Mei Teng: yup it’s great for a local experience.. but then again we’d need a guide here to communicate.. and there are no souvenirs here for tourists
. abt the fish, they don’t look like eel close-up, but i’m not sure either what type of fish they are…
uLi, Rafael : thanks.. i do hope the photos will depict a picture of siem reap to others who have not seen or been to the place … or remind those who have visited!
Rudi: haha.. the nite and old market is indeed quite different from our pasar malam – then again our pasar malam is more aimed at locals like ourselves, while the nite and old market is more touristy.
Hi lechua, thanks for dropping by. you too have a nice travel blog here.

These photos are great and colorful. There’s nothing like a fresh, outdoors fish market!
What? You can use water hyacinth to make ropes?
I learn new stuff every day!
The last photo is amazing! Strong window in blue against its sepia surrounding, did you PS it? Ha ha…
blurdevil: will share more
Luther: thx for visiting!
London Caller: yea apparently water hyacinth is used for quite a bit of stuff like making hammocks, bags (as seen in Kompong Khleang post). and yes i did use PS to bring out only the blue colour of the window!
