Sungai Chiling Waterfall is considered as one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Selangor. Located 55 km from Kuala Lumpur city, near Kuala Kubu Baru, it is a highly recommended waterfall to visit for those looking for a leisurely nature trek to a waterfall within Selangor.

With the recent hot weather, a group of us decided to make our way in 3 cars to cool off at the waterfall. After 1 ¼ hours of driving (click here for GPS coordinates and map), we arrived at our destination. The 2.5km trail includes wading through 6 river crossings before reaching the main waterfall. The trail is well marked, much of it being over flat terrain with a few muddy patches during this dry season.

an option to take the suspension bridge over the first river crossing – only 4 persons allowed at any one time on the bridge

On a sidenote, here are a few points to keep in mind when visiting the Sungai Chiling Waterfall:
- Our visit was during the dry and hot season. The water level in the river was up to about knee to hip level during this time; but it is known that the water level can be up to waist high with stronger currents in the rainy season.
- For those carrying cameras, it is safer to keep your camera away (or in air tight sealed plastic bags) whilst crossing the rivers especially where the water is deeper. Try to keep your footing on the sand rather than the underlying rocks, as they are slippery.
- Recommended to wear sandals or crocs that can withstand water and mud. Soaked trainers are not entirely comfortable and flip flops can sometimes be swept away by the current of the river.
- Bring a set of clothes to change and carry it along with you from the car. The toilet/changing area is a 10 min walk from where you leave your car.
- There is an entrance fee of RM1 to enter.

This is a place I would like to visit. Great waterfall outing. Have to be very careful with camera equipment when making those river crossing.
Sigh too bad I need to repair my camera first…probably will join in the next event.
Mei Teng: yea although when we went, the water level wasn’t too high, there were 1 or 2 who lost balance while crossing the river with underlying slippery rocks – luckily they weren’t holding cameras…
Kay Nny: what happened to ur camera?? yeaa… u should have joined us – quite a few photo opps.
Really a chilling post
The hugeeee moth close up shot very nice
wuttttzzzz! i like the spider web a lotz!
Awesome place for a picnic and a dip! I love the diving shots you did… brilliant!
Oh then luckily I didn’t go else I will definately be one of the “PK” victim
uli, henry: thanks guys… the moth was really the largest i’ve ever seen & i thought the spider web looked pretty cool
ihsan: yeaa… it’s quite well shaded too. we had to leave by 2pm coz we were starving.. if only we brought some snacks and all, we could have hung out later. but we do have to get out by 5pm.
kay nny: hey but why ur camera needs repair – what happened to it?
It dropped when I was in Vietnam. I realise that the quality of the picture that I took isn’t that sharp anymore especially on lens. Also i found some black spots on my camera mirror. So time to service!
Ahh will definitely need to take a look at this waterfall
And maybe go with my ND100. When it arrives
Kay Nny: oh dear – hope it’ll be back to its good condition in no time!
Nicholas: ND100? do u mean nikon d100? thought it’s discontinued…
So what camera model you are using now?
kuanhoong: still using the nikon d90. n urself?
I like the spider web and the portrait shots. very good. R you shooting in raw? You can do a lot more with that.
Hey, it look fun, enjoy visiting your blog post.
Cheers..
awesome place and all that but i would prefer to comment on the pics.. i love the spider web pic and the third from the bottom.
Nice natural place! The most near waterfall for me is in China,
a place calling 橫琴, 三疊泉, I went there some years before…
but when I didn’t have a good photography skill and was hard to take pictures
because I was following a hiking path…
May be you can see there in my friend blog:
http://hscheang.blogspot.com/2009/08/blog-post_21.html
waii: wasn’t shooting in raw.. coz of the huge file size. i try not to do too much processing but i have tried shooting in raw at moments like a rare sunset during travel. hmmm… might experiment more with raw for special occasions in future.
Photovigor: great to know that u enjoy it!
bengbeng: thanks. the 3rd photo from the bottom – not sure if u think likewise but i find the waterfall in the background seems to set a spiritual effect around the subject.
Rafael: checked out your friend’s photos… the waterfall is marvellous.. the water overflowing over multiple high rocks is awesome. & it’s the nearest waterfall to you?! is it a tough trail to hike up there? unfortunately i can’t read the name of the waterfall – how do u pronounce it in english – i can only read the character ‘three’
see the spider also had goose bump~
Hmm i used to think it was huge as well for raw, but once i started actually i don’t think i ever will go back to JPG. gives me better control and especially if photos are dark, you can better control exposure and not waste a good shot. Yeah i try not to post process too much but exposure, saturation and levels are something need to do lah – can’t always get a perfect shot!
This looks so much fun! You guys had a blast! It is so cool to jump into the water in a hot day. Thanks for the very helpful tips, especially for the camera!
My worry is the river crossing. You’ll need to wrap up your gear in plastic sealed bags.
I am still using D80
I went there a few months back. I wrapped my camera bag with many layers of plastic bag. I was crossing the rivers with my two hands holding the plastic bag high up – I look like a Mexican crossing the US border…LOL!
Did you see any Kelah fish at the fourth and fifth crossings? There is a similar vertical fall in Lepok Rainforest Waterfall in Hulu Selangor. Roughly 2.5 km jungle trekking.
LOVE the ‘jumpers’ series the little girl shot!!! WOW! how did the little girl crossed 6 rivers???
Cheers!
mylo
it is look fun and enjoy trip. Quite a long time never go to this kind of place.
taufulou: haha..
waii: yea i think using raw in the dark could help coz i dun have a working tripod at the moment… would be a good idea thx!
micki: at first i thought i wudn’t want to get wet… but to dip ur legs or entireself in the cool water in the hot sun was pretty refreshing!
Mei Teng: yup u’re right… otherwise it’d be rather risky
kuanhoong: d80.. same familyy..
mylo: oh dear read ur post.. u dropped ur camera in the first round..luckily it’s okay after that… it looks quite safe to cross carrying a camera, but all we need is just an accidental slip and it did happen to 2 of us in the entire group at different crossings.
kelah fish… i was more busy trying to get across with my camera in the backpack so didn’t take notice but i heard few from the group saying they saw fish at the river. i only saw small fishes around the waterfall.
Lepok Rainforest waterfall – saw your photos… it looks like a smaller waterfall right?
the girl must have been carried by her parents…. crossing the river hehe…
CHVoon: it has been a while for me too, to hang out and dip into the water of a waterfall in malaysia. think i was a kid when i did that last. it was good fun to chill out there.
wow, looks fun!
from wide to macro shots, what’s your lens?
No bad, these days Malaysian resorts are well signposted!
Even got crossing numbers!? So thoughtful. Ha ha…
Any Dr Fish “kissing” your feet in the water?
That’s 100 times better than those Dr Fish Spas in town! Ha!
Re: Arc de Triomphe / 巴黎凯旋门 / Gerbang Kemenangan / エトワール凱旋門
Likewise, I find it extremely hard to talk to local people.
Not sure if because they really do not know English.
Or they do want to speak English.
Ha ha… That’s French for you then!
chyng: i was using 18-200mm multipurpose lens. the insects r not actually macro shots ..e.g. the moth is like nearly as big as my foot; so it was more of a zoom in shot.
londoncaller: i find labelled crossings help to give us an idea how far we are along the trek. i didn’t encounter any dr. fish experience and at the rivers, i was too busy trying to get across the river without getting my camera bag wet
Agreed with Mei Teng that you have to be extra careful when crossing river. My friend dropped his D90 together with Tamron 18-275 into river while jungle trekking…
Otherwise a trip into the jungle or mountain sure rewarding with lots of photographing opp, though I’m not fancy that much.
Wow!! Love the waterfall.
It must be a good trip for you.
Love the spider shots best
cecil: oh dear…was both camera and lens ruined? yea actually i wouldn’t take my camera with me if the trail was going to be really steep. the dry season helped with the low level water and ‘not as strong’ water currents.
rainfield: it was good fun! u’d like it esp coz u’re a nature lover
horsoon: they’re huge!
Oh boy… the ant trail looks eerie >.<
Water-proof camera would be ideal in such places.
khengsiong: there were ant trailsss everywhere… & actually i saw someone having a water proof casing over their dslr – looked pretty neat.
It is not advisable to ‘carry’ along a child (below 10 years old). The stream or river crossings can be dangerous (water up to the child neck level). Especially during rainy seasons. Anyway, I guess it’s OK during dry season
I need to invest in a water proof bag…ASAP.
Cheers!
mylo
mylo: guess it depends on the season and water level. perhaps not child friendly usually. but on the day i visited, it looked pretty safe… barely any currents and low water level.
Great Photo shots of Waterfalls and Wildlife. It looks like the Paradise!
Waterfall: thanks for dropping by and having a look!
looks fun.. i cant remember when was the last time i went to a waterfall.. i think back when i was young and my dad brought me to this nearby mini waterfall.. but today i cant remember where is it.. =)
