Departure Lounge Solaris

Departure Lounge in Solaris Mont Kiara is a cozy travel-themed cafe serving all day breakfast and specialty sandwiches. It is the perfect place to hang out for a meal while planning your next travel destination.

On Saturday morning, a few of us met up at Departure Lounge for a catchup over breakfast. Apart from the lovely travel reading corner in the cafe, what I enjoy here is having the ‘Do It Yourself Breakfast’, available all day, where we can choose either a 3-item, 5-item, or 7-item platter from a choice of bacon, sausages, hashbrown, mushrooms, baked beans, eggs, and more. I find very few other cafes in Kuala Lumpur serving such a variety of American-style breakfast.

Very good presentation with beautiful photos.
    Love it.

Seems to be a perfect hang out place for travelers! A good idea for me to arrange a meeting with my fellow travel group members discussing our trip to Europe… :)

Great shots! Must be shot with a fast lens I guess. :)

  3. 3 horsoon Mar 14th, 2010 at 12:17 pm

This is definitely a cool place to check out!

  4. 4 rainfield Mar 14th, 2010 at 12:20 pm

A travel library?? What a good idea for those who like to travel.

It’s a perfect place for the travelers! Foods look nice too! ^.^

I initially thought this was in an airport. But this is truly an innovative concept for a cafe. If I were the owner, I’d also call the cash register a check-in counter :)

    Interesting cafe to be wor…nice!

  8. 8 cat Mar 15th, 2010 at 12:00 am

I wish they had something like that around the corner of my house! I’d probably hang around there all day. Wow…look at that breakfast menu. I’d love some of that pancake tower, please. ;) Great shots, Lechua!

I think this is the place that I could start to feel travelling once I sat in there before I even planned for my travelling~~

  10. 10 chyng Mar 15th, 2010 at 8:37 am

hi! is this in KL? where are you based?

  11. 11 Mei Teng Mar 15th, 2010 at 1:55 pm

I came across this cafe awhile back when I was in Solaris. Found the name abit hilarious…as in departure? Anyway, nice breakfast platter. And quite a collection of books eh?

  12. 12 lechua Mar 15th, 2010 at 11:21 pm

    PhotoVigor: thanks a bunch!

Cecil: yea.. recommend you to gather there for your travel planning – u can surf since they have wifi and browse through the books on europe at the same time to plan ur itinerary. The place was quite brightly lit with sunlight through the windows too so was using 18-200mm lens except the photos of the breakfast platter and the menu calendar (used 50mm).

horsoon: yup think u should check it out sometime

rainfield, Rafael, uLi: yea it’s perfect for travel-buffs!

Nomadic Pinoy: haha.. do they have a similar concept cafe in NY?

  13. 13 lechua Mar 15th, 2010 at 11:36 pm

cat: i love having pancakes and western breakfast which is not very common here…

micki: yes… coz of the photos and the books – it gets u in the mood for travelling really!

chyng: yup the cafe is in kl where i’m based

Mei Teng: think they were trying to have it associated with the departure lounge at the airport ;) n the books yes… the big guide names in travel references to browse through – like a mini bookshop.

    That’s indeed a cosy place!
    There’s even a fake fireplace?!
At first glance, I thought it was actually for “Tua Pek Gong”?! Ha ha…

DK is my favourite out of all those travel guides!
In fact, I collect DK travel series.
I got most from them from charity shops, ranging from £1 to £5.
    Bargain!!!

  15. 15 bengbeng Mar 16th, 2010 at 7:16 am

it would b a great place to get info once one has decided on a destination.. the idea of a trave library… a great idea.

  16. 16 lechua Mar 16th, 2010 at 1:13 pm

London Caller: aikes u meant it looked like an altar to u? oops. DK is alot more illustrative – & wow that’s a really good deal to get them at that price. i find them rather heavy to carry around though. infowise i think lonely planet is the most comprehensive – but the lack of photos deters me from gettin one sometimes – i’d only get lonely planet for a place i’m fairly familiar with and want to dig further. for a totally new place, i’d go for insight guide or one of the other guides. but the prices for travel guide books here are really steep!

bengbeng: the concept supposedly derived from the cafe owners who have a passion for travelling

  17. 17 mylo Mar 16th, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Looks like a cozy place to hangout :) But I still prefer online travel guides….fast.

    Cheers!
    mylo

  18. 18 taufulou Mar 16th, 2010 at 4:12 pm

your shot sure makes this place looks very cool~

  19. 19 fufu Mar 16th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

wow wow wow… wish i could set up my own fufu departure kopitiam in the future

  20. 20 lechua Mar 17th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

mylo: online guides faster to search for something…. i think hardcopies can be useful when u’re actually travelling. i rely on both for certain travel planning :)

    taufulou: tq!

fufu: hoho.. do let us know where so can visit!

  21. 21 London Caller Mar 18th, 2010 at 6:01 am

Well, a picture is worth a thousand words.
That’s my I like my DK. Ha ha…

These days, DK also publish city series.
You can buy DK London, DK New York, instead of DK UK or DK USA. I know they can be really heavy sometimes.

I don’t really like Lonely Planet – lots of words and you can’t “preview” places you’re going to see.

  22. 22 Leong Mar 18th, 2010 at 6:12 am

    What an awesome concept.

  23. 23 lechua Mar 18th, 2010 at 10:06 am

londoncaller: city specific ones could be more relevant and i would assume lighter :) actually if u can get travel guide books for any one of the series for a few quid – that’s awesome enough!

Leong: remember i was telling u we were lacking of breakfast places back here unlike what u have in the UK? so i’m quite glad there’s a place like that here and a bonus with its unique theme.

  24. 24 Che-Cheh Mar 18th, 2010 at 6:37 pm

Wow such a nice & unique place. And I like the “DIY breakfast” that are available all day. Haha

    Cool pictures too. :)

  25. 25 FLIP'N TRAVELS Mar 21st, 2010 at 11:51 pm

hey Lee, where’s this place? KL?
love it, I will definitely check-out the place when we go there

    Ron

  26. 26 lechua Mar 22nd, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Che-Cheh: yes u can choose what u want from a variety.. something like a buffet from a menu … but of course there’s a limit.

Ron: yes this is in kl in an area called Solaris Mont Kiara. will u guys be visiting kl again.. wud recommend u to explore other parts of msia too like sabah, penang

  27. 27 ai wei Mar 28th, 2010 at 6:19 pm
