Windows of Penang

As we stroll along the Penang Heritage Trail, it is hard to miss the sight of rows of old double-storey shophouses. The architecture of the shophouses display a combination of the British colonial influence, and the Baba and Nyonya style from the earlier days. Many would say that these shophouses contribute largely to the character of George Town today.

I thought “Anna and the King” was mainly filmed in Thailand. Good to see the Armenian Street where the movie was also filmed. Do you know how old are these buildings?

Amazing heritage buildings!!! The shophouses along Cannon Street are beautiful. Old but still gold. I’m surprised to see well kept wooden windows panes. Kudos to the state government and also the people of Penang for preserving our glorious past. I would love to see similar effort in KL especially buildings along Jalan Tun H.S lee and Central Market. Some of these buildings in are in bad shape.

The knocker at Edelweiss Cafe has Taoist influence. Did you notice that?

    Cheers!

Those old terrace houses are full of characters. They should be preserved. I see many of these terrace houses in Singapore being very well maintained and painted.

To answer you question in your previous post, I’m from Kuching, Sarawak. We don’t see much of baba and nyonya style things in Sarawak. But it is very different from West Malaysia. The food we eat are more Malay / Indonesian influences. Like when I first saw people doing “鱼生 {yúshēng}, I thought what on earth are they doing? Hahaha! But these days, I do see Sarawakians adopting this ritual.

Do you live in Penang or just visiting?

Cheryl: ooh u’re a Penangite… my family originally from penang too… all hokkien peeps :)

uLi: take a drive up some time… but u going to malacca soon too.. so will have good food!

Ron: how far is crisologo from manila? penang is about 4 hours drive from kl.

micki: actually the filiming of anna and the king was banned from being filmed or shown in thailand. so most of it was filmed in penang and ipoh (another town in malaysia)… a few scenes were shot in Armenian Street area

  10. 10 lechua Mar 28th, 2010 at 11:21 pm

Rafael: haha… yup they’re still well maintained in penang

Che-Cheh: actually lowered the saturation for the 2nd shot to give it a slightly nostalgic look

mylo: yea i’m glad the preservation works in restoring these heritage buildings did become recognized… didn’t notice about the door knob – u’re pretty observant!

ai shiang: i’ve been to kuching twice… i think east malaysia has its own unique character. i live in kl but do a yearly visit to penang as it’s my mum’s hometown and many relatives of my parents are from there.

wah so nice, giving me some inspirations to take photos in Penang. I’m going Penang next Sunday! Btw, how do u take this pic? http://www.lechuaphotography.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/DSC_0914a-1024×680.jpg .. did u put any filter? I’m a beginner… [-_-]

  12. 12 eunice Mar 29th, 2010 at 12:05 am

oh just read the previous comment… u use photoshop to edit?

  13. 13 Nomadic Pinoy Mar 29th, 2010 at 8:36 am

I love how this part of Penang looks. So full of character and nothing else that you would find elsewhere. Since a good part of the structures are wooden, I suppose they take care of restoring/preserving them.

  14. 14 lechua Mar 29th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

eunice: yes u can use photoshop to decrease the saturation of colours. For adjustments to do with white balance and lighting, i usually use Photoshop Lightroom which i find more user friendly. U can choose adjust the hue, luminance and saturation of each main colour accordingly to achieve the effect you want.

Nomadic Pinoy: these old shop houses in this part of malaysia have been well preserved – guess that’s how it could eventually be reognized as a UNESCO heritage city.

I have got to return to Penang and do one of these Heritage Trails walk :)

  16. 16 khengsiong Mar 29th, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Hmm… the pre-war buildings probably need to be renovated…

  17. 17 London Caller Mar 29th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

I heard that some of these buildings have been converted to raise swifts for their valuable birds’ nests.
It’s sad to see historic buildings like these have become derelict but it’s even sadder to see people using them to keep birds?

Local government should actually buy back those abandoned houses from previous owners and turn them into something more useful. Maybe, art galleries, libraries, etc.

  18. 18 Jimmy Tan Mar 30th, 2010 at 2:19 pm

Nice picture you have there! I love your composition and the descriptions you have on them. Fellow digizen as well! :)

  19. 19 lechua Apr 1st, 2010 at 12:17 am

Nicholas: yea do them… i found it really worth appreciating. always took it for granted.

khengsiong: so far.. in penang out of the rest of malaysia, it’s considered well kept and preserved. in spore they’ve done more renovation right?

londoncaller: haven’t heard about the bird’s nests. i think the abandoned ones are left as it is for the time being… quite a few have been restored and used for shops etc.. whereas maybe some still belong to certain clans i think.

Jimmy: thanks for dropping by! i’m guessing xi yann must have led u to this blog?

  20. 20 Jimmy Tan Apr 1st, 2010 at 11:09 am

Yeap! I’ve just got myself a new DSLR and she commented that you take good pictures, therefore asked me to drop by have a look at your photography styles. :) Cheers!

  21. 21 lechua Apr 1st, 2010 at 1:56 pm
