To get to the Wat Phra Kaew and Grand Palace Complex, take the Chao Phraya Express Boat Service heading towards the upstream direction on the right. This public boat can be quite crowded and stops only for a brief moment at each pier for passengers to hop on and off. This proved to be quite a quick way to get to the Grand Palace, bypassing the Bangkok jam and only costing 13 baht for a scenic ride.

Disembark at the Tha Chang Wan Luang stop, the pier immediately after passing the Grand Palace. Tha Chang Wan Luang literally means the ‘Elephant Pier of the Grand Palace’, where in the past, elephants were brought from the Grand Palace to take a bath here. Take a leisurely stroll through the market stalls at the pier, selling tasty Thai delicacies and snacks. The entrance of the Grand Palace is just a short walk of about 200m, straight ahead from the pier.

I love Thai food. All these local snacks look very attractive, especially the fish cake! The fried rice looks a bit different. It seems like having different spices in it..Yummy!
Hmm… the last time I went to Bangkok, I stayed in Khao San Road. It’s a 10-minute walk to the Grand Palace.

Hi, when you captured the houses along the Chao Phraya river, how did you manage to get that clear shot – I assume you were on the boat at that time… or you zoomed in from the pier? I like it. Somehow many of my shots are shaky despite having image stabilizer on the lens.
p/s: What gear do you use?
- Cheers -
micki: yup i luv thai snacks and food – they’re awesome!
khengsiong: i didn’t get to see khao san road – it’s a real colourful street i see from others’ pics.
uLi: haha… yeah the whole bowl with jelly strips look a bit geli… but cooling for a hot day!
mei teng: the best!
taufulou: plan a trip sometime soon.. can get cheap fares these days.
keatsthesunshinegirl: home-made fishcakes… wow… i saw the whole bowl of paste prepared by the lady at the stall
Nicholas Leong: it’s a much cheaper option and get to escape the bangkok jam!
Rafael Lam: yea everywhere u turn u see interesting snacks
Photovigor: many thanks! it’s great to know u like them
mylo: u like the thai curry pork…. for meals the green curry chicken and tomyam are the classics on my list of fav thai food. i missed khao san road… want to drop by there next time i’m in bkk.
chyng: ooh u’re going on the cruise… looking forward to ur bangkok stories once u’re back!.
eunice: heh that’s what happens to me when i come across food blogs at nite…
Kev: i was on the boat at that time. was using an 18-200mm with my nikon d90 camera. zoomed in on the houses. was at max aperture and using aperture setting. with enough light, the shutter speed was quite quick so managed to capture a more or less ’still’ shot of the view. the weight of the camera and lens probably helped with the stabilizing too.
Ahhh I miss Bangkok.
I can smell it through my computer. I miss bangkok and thonburi
